Instead of Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD the AVR only displays multichannel PCM?
When I play a movie from a Blu-ray disc, the "Dolby TrueHD" does not display on the front panel of the receiver, all that appears on the screen of my Onkyo receiver is "multichannel PCM".
Why does this happen?
For the Onkyo AV receiver to process the lossless HD audio soundtracks it needs to “see” a Bitstream signal from the Blu-ray player.
You will need to make sure that the output settings in the BD player are set for ‘Bitstream’ and not PCM. Only then will the correct signal will be outputted for the Onkyo AV Receiver to process.
Please note that this is not possible for all devices (eg Sony PS-3 older FAT version).
How do I know if I am getting a Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD signal ?
The easy way to tell if you are receiving the correct signal is to press the display button on the AVR (remote or front panel).
The first press will give you the video information, the second press (while the video info is on screen) will give the incoming audio information.
If it is not saying Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD (when you know the disc is) then the BD player is not outputting Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD. You then need to re-check your BD player settings and adjust to output a Bitstream signal.
HDMI interface of my AV receiver does not support 3D/I can not play 3D movies, because the HDMI input of my AV receiver does not support 3D content.
HDMI inputs with 3D support can be found in all current models. Retrofitting of older equipment is unfortunately not possible for technical reasons.
To continue using your existing hardware and at the same time being able to see in 3D with your 3D TV, we recommend the following procedure:
- Attach the 3D-capable Blu-Ray player directly to your 3D-capable TV using the appropriate cable.
- Access the audio of the Blu-Ray either on TV or the Blu-ray Player - and forward it digitally (optical or coaxial digital) to the Onkyo AV receiver.
- Some brands of 3D BD player have twin HDMI outputs, 2nd output allows for HD audio codecs to be played on legacy receivers.
The disadvantage of this configuration is merely the absence of the HD sound formats. Dolby Digital or DTS can be used easily.
